Ambassador Ramachandran Swaminathan

Ambassador of India to Austria and Permanent Representative of India to UN Offices and International Organizations in Vienna

Born in 1955, Ambassador R. Swaminathan studied Civil Engineering at the Madras University (1972-1977) followed by a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering (1977–1979).
He joined India ’s Diplomatic Service in 1980 and served in a variety of posts in Delhi and abroad from 1980 to 2009. He worked in Indian Embassies in Cairo , Doha , Paris, Thimphu and Colombo , interspersed with assignments in India in the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Atomic Energy. He was the Chief Passport Officer of India from 2007 to 2009 went on to become the Ambassador of India to Egypt from 2009 to 2012.
He has served in Vienna earlier in the IAEA Secretariat during 2001 – 2006 and was the recipient of the Distinguished Services Award of the Agency.
Ambassador Swaminathan is married and has a daughter and a son. His wife Suchitra is also an Indian diplomat. Ambassador Swaminathan speaks Arabic apart from English and Indian languages.
